I've found a few threads on upgrading to 5 in summer 2008 or by late 2008, but as far as I can tell this hasn't happened. Is there any news on this upgrade or are there certain nodes with 5 already installed?

To upgrade to 5.0 from any previous version, MySQL recommends that you dump your tables with mysqldump before upgrading and reload the dump file after upgrading. The detailed process to upgrade to MySQL5 is explained on MySQl site here:
