Default Using Domain Email vs Gmail, Yahoo, etc

A lot of people seem to be using gmail and other free emails, even those who own domains.

Any pros / cons to relying on Domain email and using it for all your needs including personal mail.

Your more likely to get spam using a free service, I would think. Plus using your domain you have more or less control ?

The only downside I can see is when the host server goes down and you can't receive/send email, this is where having a gmail could be handy.

Any thoughts ? how are you making use of those many emails they give you.

regular site emails

JMO
me@freemail looks unprofessional if this arrives as a response from your business

me@my_domain looks by far more professional

Any mail forwarded from domain mail to a free mail and any spam forwarded has to be dealt with at the free mail account carefully and NOT taged as spam as the freemail only looks to the last sender and this is one way that shared mailservers get blacklisted for spam

Its the 'security' people feel with gmail/yahoo mail/aol - they often only use the web interface and never bring the messages to their personal system.

With pop - you read it somewhere and they is where it stays (unless you have 'leave on server'). So, it means you better do your own backups (and know how to restore them) and you better have the space.

I agree (as i did in another thread) with Kobra in terms of business/professional aspects of using 'mydomain.com' instead of 'gmail.com' (or hotmail, or aol) - if you can't spent 15 a month and your business is charging 60 an hour, you are not doing too well.

got to go deal with more ice...

And it looks even better (worse) when you go to spiffywebsite.com ($60/mo. 2 email addresses included) to view a product and the site says "inquire at sales99991234 @ aol.com".

So do you think using the host email is a better spam filtering. One thing I have notice is the choice for webmail appears limited in filtering features and creating folders, etc Horde seems overkill but has more than Cube or Squirrel. I'm using the Imap setup, even that can be confusing.

For business reasons, to check email delivery, I have email accounts with most all, netscape, AOL, YaHoo, Gmail etc. - And receive tons of spam through them so I do not see where you think that they have better spam filtering than a hosted email...
BTW: As a business I want to insure that I receive all valid email sent to me and as a result have very loose filters so as not to inadvertantly block a valid inquiry and just have to deal with the adolesants that SPAM.

I use a gmail account as my H9 contact email because if my server is down I could not get emails from H9 then.

yup on the gmail if h9 is down - I do that also...

I use horde - I used to use squirrel when I was at a different hosting company but the options that were installed there - are not installed here so it was a PITA... but its free... Roundcube - I can't imagine using it - it kept locking up on me (from Firefox).

How about setting up gmail to work with your domain? Means you get all the benefits of gmail yet also have the professional feel of using your domain name for email.

A number of my clients have had this set up... although I do not use it myself - I can definitiely see benefits, but at the same time I am having no problems with the email being on the H9 server...
