In September Verizon decided to block users from using Port 25 to send email from local email clients such as Outlook and Thunderbird. They said that only Port 587 would work. In my area, most of my customers use Verizon as their ISP, as I do. Since H9 does not use Port 587 for SMTP, I cannot use Outlook to send out email. While, this does not affect Webmail, but most of us use Outlook, Thunderbird or Incredimail.
When I bought this matter up to H9, they just said "Please try to use port 25 or 26." I can't "try," it is blocked by Verizon and Verizon said there is no exception and to contact my hosting service. Which I have, but wasn't given a solution. I wasn't even aware that Verizon did this until I upgraded to FIOS and received email from Verizon. They said the reason for this was that most spammers use Port 25. (I guess they figure they won't start using Port 587). Regardless this leave me and my customers with a problem. While we can use Webmail or setup GMAIL's SMTP, this does not look good when sending email from account to have the From and Sent by be different. Are there any alternatives beside asking my customers change from Verizon, purchase a static IP address? I don't want to stop using Verizon or H9. But it seems that this would affect a lot Verizon users and H9 would see this as an opportunity to market to Verizon users who number in the millions of customers. As a Reseller, I cannot provide them with an solution for using Outlook or other email clients. I think H9 should be a notice in the Outlook configuration document that this does not apply to residential Verizon users with dynamic IP addresses. |

The SMTP server of your domain name on port 26 (with the authentication enabled) should be working.
It is working for me, I've client on ATT, Rogers and Bell. I don't have any client on Verizon, but it should be working. I won't see why. The only problem I had, it's when they Authentication is disabled from their outlook. |

This is a Verizon issue. I've tried 25 and 26. Verizon tells me it will not work. They say use port 587.
However, I still have clients on another hosting company (the one I'm trying to move from) where I have the same problem. I contacted them today and they told me they heard of this and that port 2025 would work and if it didn't, they would open port 587. Not sure why I'm moving now. Asked and answered in one day and even willing to open the port. Not at Host9. I changed the SMTP configuration to port 2025 and it worked perfectly. I tried it on Host9 clients and it does not work. I put in another ticket (there is no category for email, so this time I used Blacklisting instead of Linux Support). I received email response that said that most Blacklisting issue resolve in 72 hours. Of course, this means they haven't read the original ticked yet. You can see information on this at: http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_m...s_of_fall_2009. Of course, the solution is to either quit using Verizon or ask your provider to make some changes. Port 26 is working. It appears that the problem was rejected because of a certificate problem. Not sure what that is about. But since the Port 26 is working disregard previous posts. The message from Thunderbird was the same that I was getting with Port 25.
So never mind.

Using port 587 with authentication was established as a way to access other e-mail servers even though most ISP's block off-network connections via port 25 (to prevent spam which occurred with all the open mail servers on the net).
Port 26, Port 2025, 2525, etc are nothing more than workarounds used by some hosting providers but not others, with no standard behind them. Port 587 is an established, official port for Mail Submission Agents to use when sending mail via SMTP. It is supported by virtually all ISP's. It is not a matter of opinion, politics, or otherwise. HostNine needs to support mail via 587. This was part of a standard as early as 1998. Anything less is poor system administration which will create headaches for users.
