Default ModernBill installation notes

Okay, I'm putting down notes of what I did to get MB 4.4 installed atleast to the login screen.

1. Email support@hostnine.com to get your license and download the MB 4.4 Zend version.

2. Download Winrar and Filezilla. (I used Winrar because expanding with File Manager wasn't working but I figured out step 7 only after using winrar.)

3. Go to CPanel and click MySql and create a database. I called it modernbillDB with login 'username'. It will automatically put username_modernDB as the database name and username_username as login.

4. Fire up winrar and expand the .tar.gz file in a separate folder in your home or office computer.

5. Fire up Filezilla. Under the pulldown menu Transfer set it to Binary. Transfer the folder modernbill to public_html folder by dragging and dropping. Wait for 10-15 mins for all the files to be transfered.

6. Edit the file .htaccess in the modernbill directory. Add

php_value "magic_quotes_runtime" "0"
php_value "magic_quotes_sybase" "0"
php_value "memory_limit" "32M"
php_value "open_basedir" "no value"
php_value "register_argc_argv" "1"
php_value "register_long_arrays" "1"
php_value "short_open_tag" "1"
php_value "safe_mode" "0"

to just below the 3 php_values supplied. Just cut and paste it.

7. Edit the modernbill/include/config/config.locale.php file using

$locale_db_host = 'localhost';
$locale_db_name = 'username_modernbillDB';
$locale_db_login = 'username_username';
$locale_db_pass = 'whatever you set the password to be without the username';

$standard_url = 'www.yourdomain.com/modernbill/';
without the public_html

$secure_url = 'www.yourdomain.com/modernbill/';
if you didn't purchase a SSL certificate

8. Fire up your browser and point it to http://www.yourdomain.com/modernbill/install_v4

9. That should aleast get you to the installation screen. Ignore the red Zend, open_basedir, and another red item (can't remember).

10. That should be enough to get you to the log-in screen. Remember to use mb'username' to log in instead of your email for administator.

session.use_only_cookies is the other "red item"

By the way, the instructions worked perfectly...thank you very very much for the help. Although I'm wondering what to do with that file I have opened on my desktop?

Cheers

Setting BINARY mode is very important as most ftp apps will say '.php, its ascii' but its not.

You can transfer(FTP) the compressed package to the dir on the server and then in cPanel/filemanager extract the contents.

This is much faster and avoids the large binary FTP session

Thanks for the tip, kobra! I didn't realize the filemanager had that capability until you mentioned it here.

Actually, I had already installed MB4.4 by untarring the package file using SSH access.

It's just good to know that it can be done using the file manager because I use it frequently for installing other things like Gallery2. It's almost impossible to FTP all the individual files in the G2 full package without getting a FTP failure plus it takes forever.

Thanks again!

I tried it Kobra's way several times and kept getting errors but that was due to putting wrong info in the local.php file. I finally broke down and transferred it all manually then fiddled with the info which this time was correct! I wasn't going to touch it since I already had it working.

Lauren,

You are welcome and this also works for other scripts like forums, wordpress etc etc...

As far as I have attempted the .tar.gz and .zip all work I do not think that .rar does though
