Greg,
Almost all switches/routers today are full duplex.... Depending upon the number of stations and I suppose a shared cable/dsl modem, the minimum for a non sensitive(no regulations to comply with) intra-net would be each station has a GB nic, your internal switch/router is GB. Very few broadband providers supply GB and your outfacing will be what it is. BUT internally things will seem at first to fly....later after you are used to it it is still as fast you just have moved your mental bar higher and it seems you are waiting.

This is a home network, I already have the network, I just want to do full duplexing, is that 2 gigabit nic cards in one machine?

As kobra said, almost all ethernet connections are full duplex. The
Gb connection really speeds things up when you are moving files between PCs or to backup disks in your home network. Avoid using Ethernet "hubs" and use Ethernet "switches". The switch will avoid the packet collision problem you get using a hub. Equipment choices rely on reading the basic specs for each piece in the network to make sure it will handle the speed. Also use good CAT5 or CAT6 cable. (telephone wire and speaker wire just won't handle it )HUB - each Ethernet connection sends to all other connections / ports on the hub, if 2 terminals send at the same time there is a collision and they both back off, listen, and try to resend packets. That slows down the whole chain. SWITCH - will only sent packets to the one port that has the destination MAC address. Several "conversations" can take place at the same time through a switch... but good ones do cost more. |

Ahh Gene you shook a few cobs loose in this old mind....
Hubs - there used to be Half-Duplex Hubs - - Great when first introduced kinda the initial 300 Baud modems.... Good synopsis on switches.... Greg - if only a few stations most routers include a switch for 'bout 5 connections if you require more than this do get a good switch, for home an Un-Managed one should do you justice at lesser cost than a managed switch
