I would assume (BUT do not know for sure) that one could do anything on a VPS that they could do with a real dedicated server.

In a nutshell that is true. There are a few technical considerations (mostly dealing with kernel) that make VPS and Dedicated different, but for the most part you can do anything on a VPS you can do on a dedicated.

I'm hosting 135 low demand, mostly shopping cart sites from a VPS, have upgraded twice, added memory, still can't stay up a month without something. Once down about a day, but they did give me some credit.

I'm shopping now, I've got to get something dependable and this is not it.

I beg for suggestions and get none. It's like no one gives a damn.

From the start it's been like pulling hens' teeth to get any help / advice / suggestions. They can do what needs to be done, but they are no "help", just mechanics.
