Question Some help from those of you who are experienced?

I took the plunge and have a dedicated server. But I must say that I am an Uber-Newbie and have some questions that most may think are stupid, but I'd appreciate some patient answers.

1. I would like to try to transfer one of my sites from my RC account to my dedicated server using the full-back up feature of cPanel. However, I do not have a clue on how to access some of the root files of my server. I am used to FTP, but I'm assuming that I need to use some other utility to do this (and possibly have to learn a bucket-full of commands?). In order to restore a full backup, i need to get the compressed file into one of the following directories:

/home,/usr/home,/web,/home2,/home3,/root,/usr

How do I do this? I've downloaded Putty, but I am guessing that you have to have a good knowledge of commands in order to take full advantage of this utility.

(I have a bunch of transfer requests in with H9, but I wanted to try doing this myself to see how this works.)

2. Really stupid question. I was given a password for my main IP address, but what user name do I use when connecting directly with the server? (Which information I am assuming I will need for Step 1 above.)

3. What, at a minimum, do I need to check/maintain on a regular basis to keep my server healthy?

4. Any first-timer tips you could offer on any other aspect of maintaining a dedicated box would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hello and congrats

From when I had my own box I used the transfer option in WHM.

Another big help for me was getting the book...Linux Command, Instant reference

Amazon.com: Linux Command: Instant Reference (Command Reference): Bryan Pfaffenberger: Books

Hope this helps

Hi Greg,

Thanks for the input. I looked at that transfer option but it said to only use it as a last resort. So you found that it worked just fine for you?

A couple of ways and one is the
"Copy an account from another server with account password" from the dedi WHM
Another is to do a full site backup from the donor account cPanel selecting the following:
Backup Destination: From drop select Remote FTP Server
Email Address: your email
Remote Server (FTP/SCP only): the dedi IP
Remote User (FTP/SCP only): root
Remote Password (FTP/SCP only): your password to dedi
Port (FTP/SCP only): 22
Remote Dir (FTP/SCP only): /home

Once done you can restore from your dedi WHM backup > Restore a Full Backup/cpmove file
and it will show the available tar.gz files for restoring Enter the account user name where asked

Normally user = root

Thanks, all.

Great idea about the remote FTP backup. Didn't think about that.

I've been moving some of my less complicated accounts using the WHM Transfer utility, which works perfectly. How do you find that the WHM utility works with add-on domains and secure certificates? I haven't moved any of my accounts with those features yet. Other than making sure to change the DNS settings on the add-on domain names themselves, do these types of accounts need some extra steps when moving?

Thanks!

As Greg suggested the WHM transfer utility is usually the best for the job. It takes an exact account copy and restores it on the new server. It won't however move over SSL certificates, those accounts will need a new dedicated IP address and the SSL certificate reinstalled for them to work properly.

Feel free to contact us if you need anything such as help with securing your server or updates.

I differ with H9Dan where he states:

As I have used the WHM "copy from another cpanel account" and you are querried if this is to get an IP #, and if you have an available one and check that box it assigns and installs the SSL hosts items.

Sub-Domains only require repointing as you stated
