Default New to online databases

Hi,

I have a project in which I would like to create a online database, this project is related to a photography collection. So the system must display the images and the information associated with each image.

I'm new to online databases and I'm looking for suggestions and advice on what tools to use in order to create this project.

php + mySQL?
....?

A friend recommends me to use tomcat and berkley DB, are these technologies supported in H9 servers? I have a reseller account.

Any help will be appreciated.

Regards,

beno

Hi scoot,

Are you able to use either JBoss or Berkeley .. anywhere?
Well, I think you are right. The answer is: not yet.

I ask about this because I need to learn about online databases, so maybe I have to repost my question:

I'm new to online databases and need to learn.

1. What are your recommendation?

2. Is this technology supported in my H9 reseller account?

Thanks in advance,

beno

Hi scoot,

Thanks for your answers.

Quote:
install Coppermine Photo Gallery on your domain
I already did that. Coppermine looks very nice but has tons of features that I do not need, so it does not looks the best solution for my project.

Since my project is for a educational/cultural institution I need more database fields related to the images, a nice search/query engine and a elegant and sober report on screen output.

The other process might take about two years.
Mmmh... I guess my project has time but not that much...

I feel myself computer literate and have some experience writing code.

It seems is time to start learning php.

Regards,

beno

i made a lot of things related with databases, all depending on your needs, and budget!

for what you need, i think PHP and MySQL would be just fine, some suggestions:

- DO NOT EVER hold imagenes INSIDE a database cause this will make it BIG and complex to backup while it grows. better have an FTP and just keep only address of the imagenes inside database.

- PHP has a lot of source code, books, and help! many sites for php developers, and as someone said, there is a LOT of scripts that all ready do what you need (some of thouse opensoruce) and also many great ones made in flash conected to mysql.

Beno,

Coppermine is extensible and open source so you can cut or add features as you want. It is also only one of the open source gallery scripts. You can check at Source Forge and Google for others.

I am sure that you can find or customize one to your needs over attempting to write your own...

Ruby-on-rails if installed with the cPanel 11 by H9 would assist greatly in a ground up write of something along this line.

As eddus posted; keep the images as files and reference them with a variable and connect the image and DB stored textual data about this image in DB.

There are also several image scrollers (film strip and/or slideshow types) that you can incorporate if desired.

Good Luck
