Default Forums: Advantages/Disadvantages

Hi all,

I'm considering setting up a support forum on my hosting website. But the thing is for now, I'm the only one managing the 'business' which isn't too bad once you automate everything. The only thing I would have to deal with is support emails.

I'm thinking having a forum would increase the amount of work I need to do as it'll open up the chance for spammers and the likes. I would also have to read through almost every post.
But not having a forum could mean loosing potential customers.

What do you guys think? For a one man show, does the advantages outweigh the disadvantages or vice versa.

Having a forum is always great. A large percentage of hosting buyers look for a forum when they goto your website. Having an active forum also helps tremendously. One idea would be to setup a forum and have some friends register to get things rolling so users see activity. It's also great for posting alerts such as server upgrades etc

Good point there Rick. But in terms of activity, don't think I'll be able to get friends to register. Most if not all of them are not into online dealings and stuff. I plan to have a site news/blog page for announcements and stuff like that so that part is covered.
I'm still on the fence on this one. I wouldn't want to open up a forum with very little activity. That would definately have a negative effect on the business.
The major advantage I can think of tho is that a forum could reduce the number of support emails I get as forum members could help each other out - which is already happening on HN
